Default 2000 E350 7.3 Fuel Starvation ???

I am at my wits end on getting my 2000 E350 7.3L back running. I recently had to replace the fuel tank due to delamination. I also had the sending unti checked out, cleaned and rebuilt. Cleaned the fuel lines, fuel bowl, new fuel pump, filter, etc. After completing all the work, she cranked up beautifully and ran like a scalded dog for about 20 minutes. As soon as I hit the interstate and got above 50 she started to shudder and lose power, spewing white smoke and eventually stalling. Leave it sit for an hour and it starts right back up and runs ok for a few minutes and does the same thing. Any suggestions??? PLEASE HELP.

my guess is you pluged the filter with something you didn't quitee get clean. filters are cheap enough change it first and go from there. good luck and keep us updated.

We need some info here.....

When did the problem start, did anything trigger it?
Do you have access to a code reader or scantool?

The more info you can tell us the better. There is enough experience on here that given the correct info the solution will be found.

This is my guess. The sending unit has a white canister on the bottom of the return line. That canister snaps together. Inside there are two screens (non serviceable). If you are carefull they can be removed and cleaned. When you get all the crap out, the problem will go away.

I'm assuming that you are watching fuel pressure to verify that low pressure is causing the issue?

I changed the filter.. it's brand new. I have no check engine light and not getting any codes. It started running rough a few weeks ago. It acted like a bad fuel pump so that was the first thing I changed. Worked great for about a week then started sputtering and blowing white smoke. I was aware of fuel tank delaminations on these Fords and I pulled the tank and sure enough the lining was delaminating. The screen on the bottom of the pick up was covered with chips of the lining. I sent the sending unit out for test and repair. I replaced the tank. cleaned out all the lines and checked the fuel bowl for any lining debris.. none to be found. I did find some grit on the bottom of the fuel bowl which I don't know is abnormal eslecially for a 12 yr old van. This thing has me totally perplexed.

Smoker,

I had the fuel sending unit rebuilt. They took the canister apart and cleaned the screens.

Did you see it with your own eyes? The screens that is....... I've seen this issue frequent my shop doors.

Pressure gauge?.... Have you taken the regulator apart and checked for debris?

Yes I did see the sending unit screens. I checked it before I put it back in the tank. I did not however chek the regulator. Thanks for that tip.
